YOU IN THE DRIVER SEAT MOBILE APP

TEAM Coalition has been a partner in the annual U in the Driver Seat Symposium for 5 years. We have run a Responsibility Has Its Rewards (RHIR) sweepstakes for the attendees. And now TEAM is thrilled for the Youth Transportation Safety Program to use the RHIR campaign for the new safe driving app.

The Youth Transportation Safety Program is introducing the You In The Driver Seat App to improve and encourage safe driving by promoting the concept of Responsibility Has Its Rewards. The focus of the app is to track, report, and reward safe driving focusing on distracted driving. The safer users drive, the more points they can earn! Everyone is welcome to download and use the You In The Driver Seat App, however, only drivers who range from 16-25 qualify for rewards.

HOW THE APP WORKS

Safe Trips, are when users have a driver score of 100 points. Each trip starts the user off with a Driving Score of 100 points. For each driving infraction 20 points are deducted. Driving infractions include a phone call, texting, or opening different applications. If a user scores less than 100 points, they are not eligible for any rewards but will be notified of their driving score, the points lost and why, and tips on how they can improve for future rides.

HOW TO EARN POINTS

The number of miles traveled for each Safe Trip are multiplied by 5 to calculate the total amount of points earned. The points earned per Safe Trip determine the Star Level and rewards the user is qualified for. Users earn Safe Streak Badges for every 3 consecutive Safe Trips they complete. These badges make users eligible for random rewards.

TDS ALL-STARS

Teens in the Driver Seat (TDS) students have the opportunity to earn All-Star Points when using the app and by encouraging their peers to do the same. For every five students at a school that obtain 5,000 points within the app, that school will be awarded 5 TDS All-Star Points.

The success of the Responsibility Has Its Rewards (RHIR) campaign is a direct result of the commitment from our members and all the program partners, including the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. We are proud to see the You in the Driver’s Seat app use the RHIR campaign to reward responsible drivers. Teamwork is what this campaign is all about. We are demonstrating that when everyone – including teen drivers– takes responsibility, everyone wins.Jill Kiefer, Executive Director, TEAM Coalition

US DOT / NHTSA 2018 NATIONAL DATA:

  • In 2018, 10,511 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related (BAC > 0.08) car crashes, a decrease of 3.6% from the 10,908 fatalities in 2017.
  • Many, if not most of those lives would have been saved if people did not drive when they were impaired by alcohol or if they used sober, designated drivers or if they simply wore their seat belts.
  • Statistics and research clearly show that 21-34 year old males are the demographic most likely to be involved in an automobile crash, drive when impaired by alcohol, and fail to buckle up.
