Trainer Certification

Trainer Certification

Trainer Certification is the first step in incorporating alcohol management training into your facility’s reasonable efforts to promote alcohol responsibility. Whether you plan to certify your employees through the online tool or in-person, becoming a Certified TEAM Trainer is critical. Trainers become certified by attending an Instructor Development Program (IDP) workshop.

Instructor Development Program (IDP) Workshops are designed to:

  • Help you assess and refine your current alcohol policies
  • Expand the list of Reasonable Efforts implemented at your facility
  • Provide you with the tools needed to train and certify your staff in aclohol management
    • Teach your alcohol policies and procedures
    • Empower your staff with the skills necessary to take effective action and maintain good guest relations

Who should attend?

If you’re responsible for training event-day staff, either concessions or operations, for a large-scale sports or entertainment facility, then  TEAM training is for you. You should have public speaking experience, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of employee responsibilities, and a thorough understanding of your facility’s alcohol policies and procedures.

Who are the trainers?

The training is taught by our national cadre of TEAM Master Trainers, made up of your peers in the industry. They know the challenges you face at your facility and have innovative solutions to share. The curriculum was written by and for facility operations managers.

What will I learn?

After attending the TEAM IDP, you will be certified to train and certify your employees to:

  • Recognize signs of impairment
  • Understand how the misuse of alcohol affects them, co-workers, guests, the facility and the community
  • Manage alcohol effectively by working together as a team.

You will receive the necessary tools to train your staff, including a USB drive with the PowerPoint presentation (in English and Spanish) as well as a library of realistic role-playing scenarios to give your staff the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned. And if you are interested in an online solution for employee certification, you will learn exactly how to customize the online employee certification product for your venue.

Will I be certified to serve alcohol?

After completing the TEAM Instructor Development Program and passing the certification exam, you will be certified to train individuals at your facility. Trainer certification is good for 2 years. Recertification may be done at another trainer workshop. Or, if a trainer has certified at least 80 employees or conducted at least four training session during the certification period, the trainer can recertify by taking a recertification exam online. Online recertification is only permitted for every other certification period.

When you train your employees, they will also become certified by passing a certification exam. Employee certification is good for 3 years. Employee training in effective alcohol management provides one of the strongest Reasonable Efforts of your facility’s commitment to responsible alcohol consumption, which is the best defense in the event of a liability suit.

What are the associated costs?

The standard registration fee to attend the IDP workshop is $750. Members of IAVM (International Association of Venue Managers) and SMA (Stadium Managers Association) receive a discount. Travel expenses must be paid separately.

Additionally, certified trainers must purchase printed manuals to certify their employees in-person or online access for online employee certification. The cost per employee certification (either in-person or online) includes the cost of the certification exam. Manuals are $15 each. Discounts for IAVM and SMA members apply. Volume discounts are also available for non-members. Online access is $15 per person. See Prices.
